The Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation and the Canadian Medical Association are pleased to announce the appointment of George D. Sweeney, MB, ChB, PhD, FRCPC, as editor of the journal, effective Dec. 1, 1996.
Dr. Sweeney's career has been, in his own words, "unusual." Professionally, he can be seen as a clinician, a physiologist, a pharmacologist and a nutritionist. He obtained his MB, ChB and PhD at the University of Cape Town in South Africa and came to Canada as a physiologist to join the new school at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., in 1969. In 1981 he re-entered clinical practice, in addition to his other academic activities, because he believed that to be an effective teacher of medical students he should remain active in medicine. He has been professor of medicine at McMaster since then. He is the author of Clinical Pharmacology: A Conceptual Approach. He has pursued clinical work in nutrition and hyperlipidemia, and he has recently conducted research on the role of the oxidation of lipids, including cholesterol, in atherogenesis. He has served on committees of the Medical Council of Canada and the Medical Research Council of Canada. Dr. Sweeney is also the author of 78 articles and several book chapters. He brings a broad spectrum of experience and knowledge to Clinical and Investigative Medicine, and he looks forward to the interest and challenge of editing a journal that will adapt to the changing times. The CSCI and the CMA extend to him their best wishes for this new undertaking.
