eLetters: Poor excuse by SA High Commision
In response to: South Africa appeals to Canada to stop recruiting its MDs

I refer to your article on SA MDs emigrating to Canada.

Every industry has the right to advertise its services or recruit for their industry. It is also an individual's right to apply for such positions. It is in the nature of things.

The movement of MDs cannot be blamed only on the active recruiting by foreign countries. The SA High Commision should look at the reasons for movement more closely! 'South Africa's ability to reform the poor health infrastructure inherited from our apartheid past': is not due to active recruiting! Poor government planning and allocation and recognition of services are clearly at fault but are obviously not mentioned!

Movement of MDs has nothing to do with handling the serious HIV AIDS pandemic. The government has been reluctant (even in the face of international research!) to accept HIV as cause for AIDS. They have also been reluctant to accept guidelines for therapy for HIV. This fundamental concept is of importance in the handling of the AIDS pandemic.

Emigration of MDs should be seen in the light of any individuals right to move. Why object to MDs only? What about the hundreds of families that have skilled knowledge that have emigrated?

MDs are always easy targets. It is time that we are also regarded as people with families who will also look at improving the lot in life of our families be it local or international.
