Why is it important to study hereditary cancer?

Abstract

Is too much energy being expended on the study of hereditary cancer, given the number of people who will actually benefit? Is too much money and time being devoted to counsel "potential patients" who many never develop the disease? Even though Dr. Ellen Warner admits that she can understand why some physicians have a cynical attitude toward the growing interest in hereditary cancer, she believes there still are enough reasons to pursue research in cancer-related genetics.

Consacre-t-on trop d'énergie à l'étude du cancer héréditaire, compte tenu du nombre de personnes qui bénéficient de ces efforts en réalité? Consacre-t-on trop d'argent et de temps à conseiller aux «patients possibles» que la maladie ne frappera peut-être jamais? Même si le Dr Ellen Warner admet qu'elle peut comprendre pourquoi certains médecins se montrent cyniques face à l'intérêt croissant qu'on porte au cancer héréditaire, elle croit qu'il y a quand même suffisamment de raisons pour poursuivre les recherches génétiques sur le cancer.
