Keeping medications at home can be hazardous

Canadian Medical Association Journal 1996; 155: 1722
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario recently warned physicians about the hazards of keeping medications in the home and the dangerous practice of self-prescribing or prescribing for immediate family members. The September/October issue of Members' Dialogue cited the case of a family member of a physician who died after overdosing on samples and unused patient prescriptions that were kept in the home. There is particular danger when a physician's family member might have a history of psychiatric illness or substance abuse, the college warned.
