Meet our Faculty & Students

Dr. James Blatz, P.Eng
After growing up in Rivers, Manitoba, James Blatz received his Engineering education at the University of Manitoba. He returned to the Faculty of Engineering as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering after completing post doctoral research at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, and is now Associate Professor and Associate Head of the Civil Engineering Department. Dr. Blatz is an expert in the area of geotechnical engineering with research interests in foundation design and computer modeling of soil behaviour. His research has been published nationally and internationally, and he was recently awarded the Young Engineering Achievement Award from the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers.

Lealem Mulugeta
Lealem Mulugeta graduated from Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manitoba in 2005. In February 2006 and again in February 2007 Mulugeta was one of eight people chosen to crew the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah. The station is intended to replicate exactly how a real station on Mars would operate, and is run by the Mars Society to promote travel to Mars. Mulugeta’s primary job during his first mission was to act as the field engineer, fixing anything that broke down during the course of the mission. This year Mulugeta was chosen as mission commander. Say hi to Lealem in the halls. He has returned to get his Masters Degree! "For anyone aiming towards being an astronaut, it looks great on a resume" Mulugeta said of the Expedition Beta experience.
