Surgery

On September 12, 1883, twelve Winnipeg medical doctors petitioned the Provincial Legislature to incorporate a Medical College. Although the Charter was not officially granted until 1884, Dr. James Kerr, the first Dean, presented his inaugural address on November 15, 1883, and classes began that fall. Four of the six Professors of Surgery were among the charter members of the College:

James Kerr, Professor of Principles and Practice of Surgery, 1883-1887
 J. Willford Good, Professor of Clinical Surgery, 1883-1898 and 1900-1905
Alexander Hugh Ferguson, Professor of Surgery, 1888-1894
Robert Johnstone Blanchard, Professor of Surgery, 1905-1915

Although specialties were not established until after World War I, many of the early Professors of Surgery had trained in leading surgical centres, including Baltimore, London, and Edinburgh (with Lister).  Thus, the new Medical College enjoyed a distinct surgical flavour from its inception.

The Department of Surgery at the University of Manitoba has been affiliated with Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface General Hospital from its start, a tradition which continues today.

The Department of Surgery comprises nine sections and over 75 surgeons. These surgeons are involved in clinical practices, research, and teaching and are continually making invaluable contributions to medicine and surgery. World renowned surgeons ave ben successfully recruited across the Department.

Today, the Department of Surgery continues to be a major department of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Along with undergraduate teaching, the Department offers resident programs in all nine sections. Also available to residents is a Master of Surgery Program.

As you explore this web site, you will become more familiar with the surgeons, sections, research, and education that the Department of Surgery proffers.
