Practical Nursing (RPN) Programs
One of the ways in which the College of Nurses protects the public is by ensuring practical nursing programs in Ontario prepare graduates with the entry-to-practice competencies required to practise as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in the province.
Approval of an Ontario practical nursing program involves a review of the program’s curriculum according to the entry-to-practice competencies every five years, as well as an annual review of the program’s performance indicators.
Based on these reviews, a program may fall into one of three categories:

Category 1: Approved |
The program consistently meets expectations for curriculum and performance indicators. |

Category 2: Approved with Conditions |
The program failed to meet either expectations for curriculum or one or more performance indicators for two consecutive years. |
|
|
Category 3: Not Approved |
The program failed to meet either expectations for curriculum or one or more performance indicators for three consecutive years with no substantive improvement. |
