In the spirit of Victoriana I named these gloves Carpathia. They offer the prospect of rescuing you from the doldrum days of autumn and winter.

If you're new to lace, don't be intimidated: the two lace patterns used are very simple and the gloves are small so they still work up quickly in the small gauge.

PATTERN NOTES

[Knitty's list of standard abbreviations and techniques can be found here]

S2KP: Slip next 2 sts to right needle as if to knit them together; k next st, pass both slipped stitches, together, over stitch just knit. Forms a centered double decrease.

If you are unfamiliar with the backward loop cast on, instructions can be found here:

The jogless join technique is recommended when switching colors, while working in the round. To do this, work one round in new color; then on the first stitch of the next round, pick up one stitch in the old color from one round below the color change and knit it together with the first stitch in the new color.

Lace Pattern (Worked in the round over a multiple of 3 sts):
Round 1: [K1, yo, k2tog] to end.
Rounds 2 & 4: K all sts.
Round 3: [K1, ssk, yo] to end.
Repeat Rounds 1-4 for Lace Pattern.

DIRECTIONS

Right Glove
Note: Textured portion of cuff is worked back and forth before work is joined to begin working in the round. If you have straight or circular needles in the correct size, you may wish to use these; otherwise, use point protectors (rubber bands work as well) to prevent the stitches from falling off the ends of your double-point needles.

*Cuff
Using CC, CO 37[43, 49, 55, 61] sts.

Row 1 [WS]: P all sts.

Row 2 [RS]: K1, [yo, k1, S2KP, k1, yo, k1] to end.

Repeat these 2 rows twice more. Break CC.

Next Row [WS]: Using MC, p all sts.

Next Row [RS]: Sl 1, k to end, working sts onto double-point needles so that stitches are divided evenly between needles.

First Round: Slip last st of previous row to beginning of first needle, ensuring that work is not twisted; k2tog (work last st of round together with first st of round), k to end of round. 36[42, 48, 54, 60] sts. Place safety pin or split ring marker in work to indicate beginning of round; move this marker up as work progresses.

Work in stockinette st until work measures 1 inch from end of CC portion. Set ball of MC aside but do not break.

Using CC, work as follows:
Round 1: K all sts.
Round 2: [K1, yo, k1, S2KP, k1, yo] to end.
Repeat these 2 rounds once more. Break CC.
