Education Committee Report Linda Fraser, Chair
The report of the ASA Education Review Committee The Archives Society of Alberta Education Program: A Blueprint for the Future, 1999-2002 recommended that:
* fundamental archival education be delivered in a six-day intensive "institute";
* Special Topics Workshops be offered to supplement the fundamental education and provide continuing professional education opportunities to more experienced archivists; and
* a one-day course titled "Archival Awareness" be created to highlight archival issues for museums and other organizations which are responsible for archival material but do not have an archival program in place.
To meet these objectives, the Committee undertook the following activities in 2000-2001:
ASA Core Curriculum Course
The main activity of the Education Committee for 2000-2001 was to continue to implement the recommended and approved changes to the delivery of the core education programme. The bulk of the Committee's efforts this year focused on analyzing the Education Institute that was held in 2000 and the planning, preparation, and implementation of the Education Institute for the year 2001.
Course: Education Institute
Location: MacKimmie Library, University of Calgary, Calgary
Date: May 14 - 19, 2001
Instructors: Michael Gourlie and Margery Hadley
Guest Instructors: Jim Bowman, Don Bourdon, Doug Cass, and Susan Kooyman

A survey of participants was administered immediately following the Institute. A follow-up survey is scheduled to be administered in the fall of 2001. These surveys are a critical step in the evaluation of the revised education program as part of a two year pilot project to determine if the changes better meet the needs of Alberta=s archival community. An additional survey of the archival community in Alberta needs to be undertaken this fall, in order to determine whether there continues to be a need for this basic archival education programme and to plan accordingly for the year 2002.
