Karen Black is a vertebrate palaeontologist and Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow in the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales. Karen has published in the fields of marsupial evolution, taxonomy, functional morphology, phylogeny, ontogeny and biocorrelation. She has a special interest in the evolution of Australia's koalas and the extinct marsupial megaherbivores, the diprotodontoids. Karen has spent much of her adult life dissolving tonnes of northwestern Queensland in acid vats; extracting, curating and analysing the exceptionally rich Cenozoic fossil vertebrate faunas of the limestone deposits of the Riversleigh World Heritage Area. Her current research projects are focused on mammalian ecomorphology, and community structure and faunal change in Australian ecosystems with the aim to provide new understanding about current and future climate-driven changes in biodiversity.
