PE uses an external double-blind peer review system for all manuscripts. Copyright of scientific papers is held by one of the three sponsoring professional societies at the author's choice. Reviews, commentaries, and other material is placed in the public domain. PE papers comply with regulations for taxonomic nomenclature established in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature and the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi, and Plants.

The journal's impact factor is 1.365 according to Thomson Reuters' 2013 Journal Citation Reports. Rejection rate in 2013 was 30%. Papers are usually published within three weeks after final acceptance. Time between first submission and final publication depends on the time required to obtain peer reviews and the time it takes authors to make revisions and so varies greatly, but in 2013 the average was about 8 months.
