particular my mother, Uncle Clyde, Aunt Helen, and Annie Crummey. More
made me want to write these things down. Most of the best lines are his.
And they’re offered here in his memory. Arthur Clayton Crummey, 1930
Reviews of the original book, Hard Light, published by Brick Books:
“…fully inhabits the earth, air, fire and water of
Newfoundland….outstanding.”
The Globe & Mail
“…an exquisitely evocative world…the apparently ordinary shimmers with a
matter of fact clarity guaranteed to curl your toes.”

The Readers, Ron Hynes and Deidre Gillard-Rowlings
Ron Hynes
Ron Hynes is well appreciated as an award winning singer/songwriter.
Lesser known but equally competent are his skills as an actor. Ron’s
acting career includes two stage roles as Nfld. Songwriter Johnny Burke in
The Bard Of Prescott Street and Hank Williams in Hank Williams: The Show
He Never Gave. He appeared in the Nfld. Independent film release A Secret
Nation for which his original song, The Final Breath won a Genie award for
best song. Television viewers may know Ron from his character Johnny Shea
in the CBC/Rinkrat TV series, Dooley Gardens. Now as a reader for audio
books, his voice reading 32 Little Stories sounds like memory itself.
Deidre Gillard-Rowlings
Deidre grew up in Englee and Main Brook on the Great Northern Peninsula
and has been working as an actor in Newfoundland for the past 12 years.
She performed in Artistic Fraud's first staged production of Crummey’s
Hard Light at the LSPU Hall in 2001 and this past fall in Salvage: The
Story of a House also produced by Artistic Fraud. Deidre spends her
summers with Theatre Newfoundland Labrador at the Gros Morne Theatre
Festival in Cow Head. Her voice brands 32 Little Stories with an
authenticity that catches the heart.
