Focus and Scope

The Canadian Online Journal of Queer Studies in Education was created to provide a forum for scholars, professionals, and activists to discuss queer topics in education and the social sciences in the Canadian context. For the purposes of this journal, the term ‘education’ is understood broadly, to include all levels of education in every discipline. This journal is devoted to supporting and disseminating research and theory that promotes social justice for all queer people, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, intersex, two-spirited and trans-identified people. This forum encourages critical examination of queer discourse across disciplines and dialogue on multiple and intersecting forms of oppression based on gender, race, class, ability, religion, etc. This is a refereed journal that is affiliated with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.

Call for Papers

Call for Papers now open!!

The second issue of the Canadian Online Journal of Queer Studies in Education welcomes all submissions related to the theme, Queer Communities and Controversies. In our struggle for equality, lgbtq individuals, groups and communities differ vastly in strategies and objectives for achieving queer representation and acceptance within larger society. This journal issue will explore different philosophical approaches, research, and actions aimed at fostering social change and queer liberation. Topics for consideration might include the role of consumerism in queer culture and education; limitations of current discourses on AIDS, same-sex marriage, or other prominent issues within our communities; strategies for working towards queer liberation and peace within the global context; and different meanings, purposes, and limitations of queer cultures and communities. We are particularly interested in submissions examining issues relevant to marginalized queers, including trans people, queers of colour, queer youth and queers with disabilities. In all submissions, we challenge authors to consider the intersections of queer oppression with other forms of oppression and how these interconnections should impact our work.

This special journal issue will be published after the 2005 OISE/UT Queer Conference, which was organized under the same theme, Queer Communities and Controversies. We encourage conference presenters to submit their presentations in written form to this journal issue. The 2005 OISE/UT Conference and the upcoming journal issue represent a collaborative effort to create sites for diverse queer voices to come together, make connections, and examine points of tension and contradiction in queer politics, theories, and practices.

For more information about submission procedures, please visit the Author Guidelines under About on the journal site.

Submission deadline: July 29th, 2005
