Author Guidelines

Submissions are always welcome.

What to submit:

Articles; essays; short notes; book, film and theatre reviews; conference proceedings and bibliographies from all disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Submissions by regular mail should be sent, in triplicate, to:

Dina Ripsman Eylon, Editor
Women in Judaism: A Multidisciplinary Journal
246-1054 Centre St.
Thornhill, Ontario L4J 8E5
Canada

E-mail submissions (the preferred form of submission) may be made, in ASCII format (Plain Text) or Microsoft Word for PC, to: dina.eylon@utoronto.ca

Manuscripts should be typed and double-spaced; no name should appear on the title page. A brief biographical note and a brief abstract (up to 100 words) should accompany the submission.

Articles may be written in English, French or German.

Reference notes should follow the article.

Citations for materials in the Humanities should follow the latest edition of The Chicago Manual of Style [14th Edition] (or see a recent edition of Turabian, Kate L., A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses and Dissertations. Chicago: University of Chicago Press).

Citations for materials in the Social Sciences may follow the MLA Style of Citation. These are available on the Internet. See Karla’s Guide to Citation Style Guides. http://bailiwick.lib.uiowa.edu/journalism/cite.html

See also Walker, Janice R. (with Todd Taylor), The Columbia Guide to Online Style, http://www2.gasou.edu/facstaff/jwalker/index2.html

Materials for the Journal are submitted to a blind-review process. The editors reserve the right to edit manuscripts with respect to length and content; however, any substantial changes will be made in consultation with the author.

Previously published materials are also considered. However, it is the author’s responsibility to obtain the copyright permission from the appropriate publisher.

Authors are welcome to include images and/or pictures with their submission. Copyright issues for these should be cleared by the authors before submission.

Women in Judaism usually publishes within twelve months. Every effort is made to shorten the publication schedule. Authors are encouraged to inquire about the status of their submissions periodically.

When a work is accepted for publication, the author may be asked to supply a copy on diskette or CD, or by e-mail attachment. Most word-processing programs can be accommodated.

Prior to the publication date, authors will be required to sign a copyright agreement with Women in Judaism Inc. Basically, this copyright agreement grants Women in Judaism the exclusive rights to publish the work on the Internet.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor). Previously published materials are also considered. However, it is the author’s responsibility to obtain the copyright permission from the appropriate publisher.
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. All URL addresses in the text (e.g., http://pkp.sfu.ca) are activated and ready to click.
  4. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.

  6. The text, if submitted to a peer-reviewed section (e.g., Articles), has had the authors' names removed. If an author is cited, "Author" and year are used in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of author's name, paper title, etc. The author's name has also been removed from the document's Properties, which in Microsoft Word is found in the File menu.
