FAQs for UniversitiesOur university is interested in participating in your program. How do we submit theses to your program? There are two ways to submit theses to the Theses Canada program. If your university has or intends to set up an electronic thesis submission program Library and Archives Canada will harvest your metadata and ETDs (electronic theses and dissertations) and make them available on the Theses Canada Portal thus providing immediate access to researchers and scholars around the world. For more information please contact: Sharon Reeves If you are submitting print theses they will be processed by our contractor, ProQuest. For more information see How to Submit Theses Via ProQuest. Electronic theses can be submitted to ProQuest as well as directly to Library and Archives Canada. For information on how to submit electronic theses to ProQuest contact Theses Canada at theses@lac-bac.gc.ca, or at 819- 994-6882 or 1-866-578-7777 (Toll free in North America). What does it cost to participate in your program? There are no fees associated with our ETD harvesting program. ProQuest charges a publishing fee for each thesis or dissertation that they process on our behalf. Library and Archives Canada provides a partial subsidy of $16.00 per thesis. From April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009 the university portion of the publishing fee is $40.00 per thesis. From April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010, it will be $41.00 and from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011 it will be $42.00. What does ProQuest's publishing fee cover?
We understand that personal information should not be included in theses and dissertations sent to Theses Canada. What constitutes personal information? To find out what constitutes personal information go to the FAQs www.privcom.gc.ca/faq/index_e.asp section of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada website. Look for the question "What is personal information"? We're getting ready to ship our theses to ProQuest. What Library and Archives Canada documentation do students need to know about? All students need to first read What You Should Know, then complete the Theses Non-Exclusive License. We get a lot of questions from students about copyright. How do I advise them? Please refer them to the information on copyright on the Theses Canada Portal. Is it possible to send older theses to Theses Canada? Yes. Please include Library and Archives Canada's Theses Non-Exclusive License form signed by the thesis author. As well, the thesis must be in good condition. My university is considering a retrospective digitization project for its back file of theses and dissertations. What do we need to consider? You need to take three things into consideration - copyright, personal information and the quality of the original source.
Who assigns the ISBNs to theses? ISBNs are not assigned to electronic theses and dissertations harvested by Theses Canada. For theses processed by ProQuest, ISBNs are assigned to each thesis using the Library and Archives Canada prefix. Open access refers to free full-text online access to digital scholarly resources, such as scholarly journals or electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), which is available to anyone who has access to the Internet. |
