Library and Archives Canada Invites Its Users to Take Part in Consultation on Services

(OTTAWA, February 20, 2008) - Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is launching a public consultation initiative that aims to get feedback on how it serves the public. Two meetings in Ottawa on February 26 will be the first in a series of public consultations to be held across Canada.

LAC's ongoing consultations will include not only public sessions with LAC users, but opportunities for the public to provide feedback through the Internet, by mail and by telephone.

"Library and Archives Canada is committed to helping Canadians better understand Canada's heritage, knowledge and culture," said Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada. "As a reflection of this commitment, LAC is developing a service strategy to ensure that our clients receive the services they expect from a national knowledge institution. A key part of this process involves public consultations to provide Canadians with opportunities to offer feedback and new ideas on what types of services LAC should offer and how such services should be delivered," Mr. Wilson added.

Besides the public sessions, LAC also recently established a Services Advisory Board (SAB), composed of representatives of user communities from a variety of backgrounds and regions across Canada. The SAB, which will examine issues directly related to the services aspects of LAC's mandate, will meet three to four times a year.

The first two public consultation sessions in Ottawa will be held in Room A, Library and Archives Canada Building, 395 Wellington Street, on February 26. The first session will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., and the second session from 7 to 9 p.m. Both sessions are open to the public.
