"We were so far away..." The Inuit Experience of Residential Schools

The Legacy of Hope Foundation, in partnership with the Aboriginal Healing Foundation and Library and Archives Canada, has produced its second exhibition on residential schools. The exhibition uses the oral testimonies of eight Inuit Survivors to portray the collective Inuit experience of residential schools. Photographs from the personal collections of each Survivor and from nine Canadian church and public archives poignantly illustrate their collective and individual experiences.

Project Naming

Project Naming is a trilingual Web exhibition containing a searchable photographic database available in English, French and Inuktitut. The goal of this project is the identification of Inuit portrayed in some of the photographic collections of Library and Archives Canada (LAC). New information is added to the archival records of these historical photographs and made available in the database of the Project Naming Web exhibition.

Family Portraits: immigration and identity

Free

New immigrant families explore issues of identity and citizenship through portraiture. Local participants worked with an artist-facilitator, also an immigrant, to create multigenerational family portraits. The portraits from local participants and those from a parallel project in Halifax are displayed.

This project reflects the participants' collective and individual journeys in coming to Canada and is presented by the Portrait Gallery of Canada in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Part historical mystery, part sci-fi thriller, this documentary film tells the compelling story of the Sanders portrait, a painting whose owner claims it is the only image of Shakespeare taken from life.

Presented by the Portrait Gallery of Canada, a program of Library and Archives Canada, in collaboration with director Anne Henderson, producer Nathalie Barton and InformAction Films, Montréal.

The film is in English only. Simultaneous translation for the panel discussion.

The Indigenous Peoples Solidarity Movement Ottawa presents the film The Invisible Nation, winner of the 2008 Jutra for Best Documentary, directed by Richard Desjardins and Robert Monderie. The evening will start with an opening ceremony conducted by Dr. William Commanda, respected 95-year-old Algonquin Elder and Founder of Circle of All Nations.

After the film will be a panel discussion with Claudette Commanda, Algonquin, Anishinabeg, National Coordinator of First Nations Confederacy of Cultural Education Centre and the film directors Richard Desjardins and Robert Monderie.
