PWGSC federal lead for Sydney Tar Ponds cleanup

January 28, 2007 - The Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia reached an historic milestone announcing the full remediation of the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens cleanup to begin in spring 2007.

Using proven, effective technologies, the sites will be cleaned up on a cost-shared basis over eight years, with the federal government contributing up to $280 million and the province, $120 million.

Pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, the Sydney Tar Ponds and Coke Ovens remediation project was subject to an Environmental Assessment (EA) process. The project was referred to a review panel as the most appropriate type of environmental assessment. The Joint Review Panel filed its report in July 2006 to which the Government of Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia provided a formal response - see links below.
