The goal of this conference is to enhance the knowledge transfer between providers and users in the field of health statistics and, to highlight the importance of trust in the data and results in terms of its use for policy decisions.

The conference is an opportunity for individuals who provide and/or use health data to meet to discuss data collection, analysis, and dissemination.

Providers and current and potential users of health data will find this conference of benefit to them.

Dr. Michael Decter from the Health Council of Canada will be the keynote speaker. There will also be a panel discussion on “Health Goals, Indicators and Data-What is the right balance?” including the Honourable Carolyn Bennett, David Butler-Jones, Roy Romanow and Richard Lessard.

Interesting and provocative sessions will focus on subjects including: the impact of nutrition data on the health of Canadians; the link between data and policy development; communicating health data to the public; the dynamics of health; and, capacity building amongst data users. Pre-conference workshops are designed to instruct users in the exploitation of existing health data.

At the end of this conference, participants will be able to:

  • identify the availability and accessibility of Canadian health data;
  • describe examples of health data analysis;
  • understand how health policies are derived from data;
  • identify data quality issues (e.g., timeliness, completeness, reliability);
  • appreciate the uses and value of longitudinal data;
  • evaluate the usages of health data, indicators and goals.

The target audience for the conference is Canadian health data providers and users. This includes, but is not limited to the following organizations/individuals:

  • researchers ;
  • Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC);
  • Health Canada;
  • health policy/program planners and decision-makers;
  • epidemiologists;
  • Public Health professionals;
  • Social Service.

Non-government organizations would also find this conference of interest.
