Contract & Aboriginal Policing

Background

The RCMP provides policing services under contract to all provinces and territories of Canada , except Ontario and Quebec . This is called contract policing, and it is at the heart of what the RCMP does. Policing agreements cover 75% of the geography of Canada , including much of rural Canada , all of the Canadian North, and many towns and large urban areas in contract provinces. Contract policing is how most RCMP members acquire the hands on policing and investigative skills that will serve them throughout their careers.

What We Do

Contract and Aboriginal Policing (CAP) is responsible for managing all areas of contract policing within the RCMP, which also includes Provincial, Territorial, Municipal and Aboriginal policing. CAP supports front line police officers in their day-to-day operations by ensuring the highest quality of policing services. This is done through the development and delivery of national, operational policies and programs, as well as the latest research and tools which support contract policing, but also enforcement, prevention and education throughout the entire organization.

• Contribute to safer and healthier Aboriginal communities
• Support crime prevention, intervention and enforcement initiatives
• Prevent and reduce youth involvement in crime as victims and offenders
• Support the development and maintenance of tools, information, technology and training that facilitate the delivery of front-line policing
• Support the renegotiation of provincial police service agreements and provide on-going support to RCMP divisions once the agreements are in place
• Ensure enhanced use of force reporting and consistent national standards
• Support operational readiness within the RCMP for major emergencies or disasters
