Drug Enforcement Branch

Did You Know?

  • Sixty percent of illicit drug users are 15 to 24 years old
  • The average age of first use of illicit drugs is as young as 11 among some high risk groups

Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse

Drug abuse has both subtle and tragic consequences for youth, adults, families and entire communities. Organized crime groups are involved in every aspect of illicit drug activity, with the resulting profits funding other crimes that affect us all: financial fraud, identity theft, counterfeiting...even terrorism. Marihuana grow operations and synthetic drug labs continue to be secretly operated in residential neighbourhoods across Canada, posing numerous dangers that put the entire community at risk.

The RCMP’s Drug Program aims to prevent drug-related social and economic harm by reducing the supply and demand for illicit drugs in Canada. Working closely with the community and our partners, we believe in an approach that involves prevention and education along with enforcement.

Drug Branch at Headquarters in Ottawa provides operational, program and policy support to its divisional drug units, detachment personnel and various partners within Canada and abroad. We work closely with our Criminal Intelligence Program to stay current on the latest trends, and use this information to enhance the effectiveness of our front line policing.

Recognizing that the drug problem is one of global proportions, we clearly can’t fight it alone. Other law enforcement agencies, our foreign partners, all levels of government, the private sector, and the public we serve are all vital to creating safer homes and communities.
