At Three Things the Earth Shakes

She dampened my sleeve so quietly
I was unsure if she cried at all.
I held her awkwardly,
my forehead against her curls.
We sat like that a long time, a pieta,
both silent, neither of us understanding why
this tearing of the sky's fabric,
this rending of the natural order.

MARIANNE JONES IS THE AUTHOR OF A CHAPBOOK, "HIGHWAY 17." SHE IS A TEACHER/WRITER WHOSE WORKS HAVE APPEARED IN WASCANA REVIEW, PRAIRIE JOURNAL AND ROOM OF ONE'S OWN. SHE IS ALSO A FOUNDING MEMBER OF INKWELL, A WRITER'S GROUP THAT MEETS MONTHLY IN THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO AND HOSTS AN ANNUAL READING.
