That doesn’t mean however, that the poets are not as
pleased as punch.
"It was amazing to have my book published at all,
and now this - I'm very honoured."
Murakami wrote the book "hoping that maybe people - other poets at
least - would maybe think about the issues I was thinking about in
writing the book (Vancouver's missing women, the problems of
representing or speaking for/to marginalized populations, etc)..."
Murakami is hopeful this might happen. "I actually found out about
it by friends out East who heard the news first congratulating me on
Facebook."
Jacob Scheier, another poetry finalist was equally
surprised by ecstatic. "Well, I was, still am kind of in shock.
Myna Wallin called to congratulate me around 11 am - I had just woken up
and have had a bad cold for days... she asked if I had heard the news?
My response was something like "are you fucking serious?" I
forget exactly what I said. I then checked my email - there was a
congratulatory note from Michael Holmes. I called him - he was stoically
excited, I would say."
