The Ottawa Valley Music Association Deposits New PublicationsJean-Eudes Bériault, Acquisitions and Bibliographic Services On May 17, 2001, Patrick Bourke, President of the Ottawa Valley Music Association (OVMA), presented approximately 30 CDs and cassettes to National Librarian Roch Carrier. These sound recordings consist, for the most part, of original works written and performed by members of the Association and represent many different types of music, ranging from gospel, pop, Celtic, country and alternative rock to yoga music and songs that tell stories.

While officially accepting the sound recordings as legal deposits, Mr. Carrier took the opportunity to thank the Association's representatives for this contribution to the Library's Canadian heritage collection. Collecting Canada’s musical heritage is an integral part of the Library's mission, as is collecting its printed, audiovisual, digital and electronic heritage. Although more difficult to locate, regional heritage plays an important role in enriching Canadiana collections. It is also a resource that promotes the understanding of Canadian diversity. For this reason, initiatives similar to that of the OVMA are encouraged and should become more common nation-wide in all areas of publishing so that original works and regional riches are preserved by the Library and become known, purchased and appreciated by Canadians or by anyone interested in Canadian publishing. The Library receives approximately 4 000 CDs through legal deposit each year; its collections consist of approximately 250 000 sound recordings. As stated in the National Library Act, legal deposit is a legal obligation that ensures that all Canadian publishers and producers provide the National Library with copies of their publications; it is the Library’s primary acquisition source for works published in Canada. Furthermore, it continuously feeds the various bibliographic and consultation services offered at the National Library. The presentation was enhanced by a mini-concert given by Association musicians Cindy Sidock and Barney McCaffrey. The Ottawa Valley Music Association was created in 1999, and its membership boasts approximately 100 musicians and composers from all genres whose desire it is to promote Ottawa Valley music.
