Our Friends
Eleven years ago, Dr. Marianne Scott approached me saying she had a dream that one day there would be an organization of Friends of the National Library and asked would I organize it. With a formidable team of volunteers, the Friends became a reality and have, through various fund-raising efforts over the years, seen the purchase of many unique treasures for the Rare Books Collection of the Library. Grete Hale I have thoroughly enjoyed my 10-year "connection" with the Friends of the National Library, as a founding board member, president, and now past president. It is fitting that our 10th anniversary coincides with the International Year of Volunteers, as I truly believe it is the dedicated volunteers from among our membership who have allowed us, as an organization, to contribute so substantially to the National Library of Canada. Gail Baird Serving as a volunteer with the Council of the Jacob M. Lowy Collection has provided me with the wonderful opportunity to serve with a group of dedicated Council members who share the same passion, pride and pleasure of being a small part of this national treasure, the National Library of Canada. It has been my honour to give something back to the community and to spread the word, to educate the public about how friendly and welcoming the National Library of Canada and its staff are. Dr. Norman Barwin In 1999, Ronald I. Cohen, current President of the Friends of the National Library of Canada, donated more that 300 works by Lucy Maud Montgomery to the National Library of Canada. "The Library is very grateful to the Friends of the National Library who acquire materials and donate them to the collection each year. Gifts from Friends such as Ronald Cohen are becoming more and more critical to ensuring the continuing viability of our national collection of Canadiana."
