Our Friends

Eleven years ago, Dr. Marianne Scott approached me saying she had a dream that one day there would be an organization of Friends of the National Library and asked would I organize it. With a formidable team of volunteers, the Friends became a reality and have, through various fund-raising efforts over the years, seen the purchase of many unique treasures for the Rare Books Collection of the Library.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my 10-year "connection" with the Friends of the National Library, as a founding board member, president, and now past president. It is fitting that our 10th anniversary coincides with the International Year of Volunteers, as I truly believe it is the dedicated volunteers from among our membership who have allowed us, as an organization, to contribute so substantially to the National Library of Canada.

Serving as a volunteer with the Council of the Jacob M. Lowy Collection has provided me with the wonderful opportunity to serve with a group of dedicated Council members who share the same passion, pride and pleasure of being a small part of this national treasure, the National Library of Canada.

It has been my honour to give something back to the community and to spread the word, to educate the public about how friendly and welcoming the National Library of Canada and its staff are.

In 1999, Ronald I. Cohen, current President of the Friends of the National Library of Canada, donated more that 300 works by Lucy Maud Montgomery to the National Library of Canada.

"The Library is very grateful to the Friends of the National Library who acquire materials and donate them to the collection each year. Gifts from Friends such as Ronald Cohen are becoming more and more critical to ensuring the continuing viability of our national collection of Canadiana."

Volunteers in the Music Division

Over the years, the Music Division has been very well served by a faithful corps of volunteers. The National Library of Canada would like to take this opportunity to express its appreciation to the following individuals for their many years of volunteer work in the Library’s Music Division:

  • Lois Moody has helped with the organization and maintenance of the documentary collections of concert programmes and vertical file materials. She has also devoted a great deal of time to the organization of printed resources in the Recorded Sound Collection.
  • Catherine Clack has created an Inmagic database for the foreign sheet music collection; to date, nearly 15 000 pieces have been indexed.
  • Phyllis Kofmel has assisted with discographic research for the Recorded Sound Collection.
  • Lucien Desjardins has entered data on 78-rpm recordings into an Inmagic database.

To these and all the other volunteers who have helped the National Library over the years, thank you.
