Electronic Publications: Increased Participation by Federal Government DepartmentsLouise Tousignant The number of titles in the Electronic Collection has grown considerably in recent months thanks not only to the addition of human resources to the electronic publications acquisition team, but also to the participation and increase in the number of departments depositing their electronic publications with the National Library of Canada. The new departments include Elections Canada, the Canadian Grain Commission, the Law Commission of Canada, the Canadian Artists and Producers Professional Relations Tribunal, the Canadian Space Agency and the Millennium Bureau of Canada. The month of October saw a record number of periodical registrations - 1 476 issues published by commercial and governmental sectors. Let's have a closer look at some recent additions to the Electronic Collection.
Published by the Millennium Bureau of Canada in PDF format, this publication, with its explanation of the Government of Canada's millennium logo, refers back to the transition to the year 2000. It may not be necessary to point out that the logo is composed of a flame, a human figure, a maple leaf, the number 2000 and the "Canada" wordmark. The logo was printed on cheques issued from June 1999 to December 2000 by the Receiver General of Canada, including cheques for income tax refunds and those distributed under programs such as Old Age Security and the Canada Pension Plan.
Published by the Translation Bureau in PDF format, this publication provides access to 800 terms for the competitions, the athletes and the athletic facilities used during the IV Games of La Francophonie. For example, among other things, one can learn that the English translation of the French expressions "accepter le témoin" and "recevoir le témoin" used in relay races is "accept the baton."
Published by Elections Canada in PDF format, this publication will help those organizing elections at their college or university by providing concrete, practical information on each step in an election. There is even a section on electronic voting that ensures the three basic principles of the democratic process - participation, fairness and transparency - are followed.
It was also during this period that the National Library received the electronic versions of the Performance Report of federal government departments for fiscal years 1998-1999, 1999-2000 and 2000-2001. This deposit helped complete our holdings, which now cover the period from 1995-1996 to 2000-2001. The 1995-1996 fiscal year contains the reports from the 16 departments that had agreed to participate in a pilot project, while the 1996-1997 fiscal year marks the beginning of the official production of the Performance Report for all departments. As new publications are archived, a selection of suggested titles is presented on the Electronic Collection's What's New page, which is updated monthly.
