Additional Subject Headings for Federal Government DocumentsAnne Draper On June 3, 2002, the National Library began creating core level records for Canadian federal government monograph and serial publications. Although less complete than full records, core level records contain important data not found in minimal level records. This initiative, which will be phased in over the next two years, will result in records for federal publications currently catalogued at minimal level being replaced by core level records, complete with subject headings. Use of the core record will result in increased subject access by adding subject headings to approximately 30 to 35 percent more federal publications than before, while continuing to allow for the timely production of cataloguing records. The production of core cataloguing records will include all formats and will also be incorporated into the Library’s program of providing speedy cataloguing for Depository Services Program (DSP) materials. Increased subject access will facilitate resource sharing within the Canadian library community and further the Canadian Federal Government’s objective of increased access to its publications. By the end of the two-year phase-in period, the Library expects to be providing subject access to all current Canadian federal government publications received, with ephemerae being the sole exception. The Library is committed to providing free access for all Canadians to knowledge on Canada and the delivery of the national collection to Canadians and to the world and welcomes feedback regarding this initiative.
