Surveillance is an essential component for the planning, implementation, and assessment of chronic disease prevention and control. It is an ongoing collection of data, the integration, analysis, and interpretation of data, and the dissemination of information to those who need to know. Chronic disease surveillance provides relevant information for action. More specifically, surveillance related to chronic diseases allows us to better understand diseases and therefore improve the targeting of programs and research. Surveillance includes the collection of data, and the review, analysis and dissemination of findings on incidence (new cases), prevalence, morbidity, survival and mortality of disease. Surveillance also serves to collect information on the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of the public with respect to practices that prevent disease and facilitate screening. In addition, surveillance can be used to monitor access and availability of appropriate curative, supportive and palliative care as well as outcomes such as survival and quality of life.

You will be able to look at trends in major chronic diseases mortality by province and territory, by age group, over time, and for many different chronic diseases. National Diabetes Surveillance System (NDSS)

The NDSS is a multi-sectorial initiative of government, non-government agencies, Aboriginal groups and industry who are committed to reducing the incidence and complications of diabetes through leadership in the development, implementation and national coordination of provincial, territorial and Aboriginal diabetes surveillance systems.

The NDSS will provide a national, standardized database of Canadian data on diabetes and its complications. This source of data will provide a foundation for effective planning and evaluation of diabetes prevention or control programs.
