The World Health Organization (WHO) invited the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and Health Canada to work collaboratively on a project to develop a guidance document for school policy-makers. As part of this collaboration between WHO and the Government of Canada, PHAC led a steering committee on the development of a framework document and, along with Health Canada, provided financial support.
The result was the WHO-produced publication School Policy Framework: Implementation of the Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health (External link) (DPAS).
The purpose of the DPAS School Policy Framework is to assist member States in implementing a national strategy on these important subjects, within their own countries. The Framework guides policy-makers at the national and regional level in developing and implementing policies that promote healthy eating and physical activity in schools through changes in environment, behaviour and education. It describes how to begin implementation, the various policy options available and how to involve stakeholders. It also provides guidance on policy monitoring and evaluation.
