Canadian Theses and ISBNs: A Little History

Theses microfilmed and catalogued before August 1995 as part of the National Library’s Canadian Theses Service were assigned the ISBN prefix 0-315-. Those catalogued since have the prefix 0-612-. The first prefix was given to 100 000 Canadian theses. For those interested in history, the first ISBN with the 0-315- prefix was given to a doctoral thesis from the University of New Brunswick, submitted by David Arnason in 1980, entitled “The Development of Prairie realism...”. The last work to receive the 0-315- prefix was submitted 14 years later by Behrouz C. Ahvazi at McGill University. His master’s thesis dealt with “Mechanism of modulation of immune responses during blood-stage malaria”.
