Flying Officer David Albert Romans, RAF DFC

...Last winter, I was guest speaker at a meeting
of the Historical Society of my hometown, Glace Bay,
Nova Scotia.  I asked my audience of 100 if anyone
knew who David Romans was.  None did.

David Romans was the first Nova Scotian to be awarded
the Distinguished Flying Cross.  He was the first Canadian
to pilot an RAF American Flying Fortress.  He flew thirty
bombing missions over enemy territory and 28 "gardening"
flights dropping leaflets.

David Romans was decorated by King George VI
at Buckingham Palace.

He died when his bomber was shot down over Norway.
He was on a bombing run to sink the German battleship,
Admiral Scheer in a Norwegian fjord.  He was 20 years old.

David Romans was from Glace Bay.

Canadians have never started a war but when liberty and
freedom came under attack they were always among the
first to fight the aggressor.  It is never my intention to
popularize war – the brutality, the killing and senseless
loss of life. But, from time to time, wars do break out and
Canadian men and women served above and beyond
the call of duty.

These are the heroes whose stories must be told
and perpetuated.

It isn't enough to just wear a Poppy on Remembrance Day
or stand by the Cenotaph, with head bowed, as a bugler
plays The Last Post.  Our freedom and liberty were won
because Canadian blood was spilled in France, Holland,
Belgium, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and
the Middle East...
