Lesson #5 Museum/Gallery Field Trip

  • Time: 45 min + travel time.

  • Logistics: Field Trip to Carr House, museum, or gallery, classroom activity.

  • Supplies: Transportation, completed permission forms, and supervisors.

  • Guide Activity: The Gallery Walk (p.65).

Activities

Number 1

Take students on a field trip to the Emily Carr House, a museum, or gallery. Using The Gallery Walk, invite the students to paint or draw an artwork or artifact that they saw during the visit. The Gallery Walk will help place the artwork or literature in the context of time, place, and values.

  • Ask the students to label the artwork with the name of the artist, date, medium used, size, and location of where the piece was stored or hung (e.g., museum, library, home, school).
Number 2

Develop criteria for students further presentation that includes using the information requested from The Gallery Walk.

  • Ask the students to paint or draw a second image of the artwork or artifact they recorded on the field trip. Label appropriately (e.g., signing the artwork with the students’ name and labelling on the back of the artwork the title, date, medium, size, and location of their artwork).
