Lesson #5 Collectors' Field Trip

  • Time: 1 hour+travel time.

  • Logistics: Visit Emily Carr House or a museum/gallery.

  • Supplies: Transportation, completed permission forms, supervisors, paints, paper, and assorted items.

Activities

Number 1

Begin with a review of Emily Carr and her artwork. Visit Emily Carr House or a museum/gallery for an actual tour. Discuss the display and the role of a museum/gallery curator. Have students pretend to be the curator for an exhibit and think of a way to make an effective display, given the nature of the work.
Ask the students to start by having them:

  • Develop a questionnaire or inventory of art preferences like that of a curator. Have students survey three or four people outside the classroom, completing the inventories themselves. Ask respondents to identify which of three or four images they prefer.
  • Ideas for prompts and questions include: If I collected art, I would choose pictures that_____.
  • Prepare a set of images with corresponding brief statements from the artist or a critic/curator describing the thinking behind each work (e.g., its purpose, its significance, the technique being used, the movement that may have influenced the artist).
  • Create their own display to showcase an artwork/artifact. Students bring an artifact from home or create a drawing or painting. Have them set up a display to exhibit the piece, including labels.
