Emily Carr at Home and at Work

Neighbourhood Walk

Many other houses and sites closely associated with Emily Carr are situated within a single block of Carr House. Around the corner at 646 Simcoe street is the House of All Sorts, the boarding house in which Emily lived and operated from 1913 to 1936. (Now privately owned). At 218 St. Andrews Street stands the home built by Emily’s sister Alice, for her private kindergarten and residence. In 1940, Emily moved in with Alice and set up a studio in the former classroom. (Now privately owned). At 231 St. Andrews Street is the house built by Edith and Lizzie Carr in 1913 as a rental property. It is now a bed and breakfast inn. All of these houses were built on property which the girls had inherited from their father’s estate. Emily died on March 2, 1945 at St. Mary’s priory, a home for seniors run by Roman Catholic sisters. Today, this building is the James Bay Inn. One of Emily’s favourite places was Beacon Hill, within sight of the House of All Sorts at the top of Simcoe St. If you have the time to stroll there and along the nearby Dallas Road waterfront, especially along the beach, you will be retracing the route Emily took almost daily on her walks with her dogs and on sketching trips.
