FATHER WAS VERY CLEVER

Christmas presents were very scanty. I remember, when I was home with my mother, I was 13 years old before ever I saw Santa. The toys came from the Grenfell Mission. In the toe of our stockings we would have about a handful of candy, done up in a piece of paper, and you'd have a handkerchief or, if there was no handkerchief, a cake of soap. That was our time. But my father was very clever with what they calls a crooked knife. It's a knife that trappers use. He would get an extra piece of wood, wood he knew he could use, and he'd make extra little flowers, like roses, for me and my sister, and that would go in our stockings too. And for my brothers, there would be a dog team. That was the toys we had.
