nighthawk, for they are similar in colour tone and markings, both have curved wings and bills, and both are about the same size. They are nocturnal birds, and their repeated call is heard throughout the night, especially as dawn approaches. Their call (for which they were named) is a constant "whip-poor-will", and occasionally a backwards-sounding "purple-rib". During the day they can be spotted resting horizontally on tree limbs or even on the ground, however they are difficult to see because of their dead-leaf-like pattern. They are found in leafy woodlands.
