Marine Hunting

All These Materials Mentioned Are Items That Have Been Collected Within The Maritime Archaic Cemetery.

Large bone foreshafts, and barbed and toggling harpoons were used to hunt seals and other mammals. Once an animal was wounded by a harpoon, ground slate points and bayonets, hafted to a shaft, were used to kill it.

Fishing
Leisters were used to hunt fish in shallow water, such as salmon in rivers.

Woodworking
Large polished stone axes, adzes and gouges, and beaver incisors were used to carve out dugout canoes, house frames, and wooden bowls. Since no wood survived, little is known about styles and decoration.

Raw Materials

Ivory from walrus bones was used to make tools as well.

Beaver Incisors were used as sharp carving tools, especially for artwork.

Caribou Bones were used to make tools such as scrapers (scapula) and beamers (tibia) for cleaning fat off skins.

Animal Skins were used as covering for houses, clothing and sleeping bags.

Antler, Bone and Ivory were used for tool making and for tools.

Wood was used as a source of raw material but, because of soil conditions in the area, artifacts made of wood did not survive.
