Archaeological excavation requires extensive support and manpower for it to succeed. That part of the project was willingly given by the locals of Guysborough County and in particular, from the residents of the nearby town of Canso. In turn, the impact was extensive and continues to affect the region today.
The excavations on Grassy Island affected the area in many ways. Besides promoting awareness amoungst the locals, it also helped the Canso area to gain world wide recognition.
Below you will find three separate sections. The first addresses how the site and the excavations enhanced the economy and tourism of the area. This came both from the establishment of the Grassy Island National Historic site and from the influx of workers. The second link will take you on a virtual tour of the Grassy Island National Historic Site. The third, but by no means the last area, will address the personal stories of the workers on Grassy Island and how it in turn affected their lives.
Grassy Island has helped to instill a great amount of pride back into our communities. We hope that you will be able to see why as you venture through our site. The richness of the culture and history in Eastern Guysborough County is unsurpassing.
