Mining

There are presently three mines operating in Nunavut: Polaris Mine (lead-zinc) on Little Cornwallis Island, Nanisivik Mine (lead-zinc) on Baffin Island, and Lupin Mine (gold) at Contwoyto Lake, Southwest of Bathurst Inlet. None of the ore from these mines is smelted in the area. Instead the concentrates are shipped to the South. A number of other developments of known deposits are currently under consideration. In addition, there is ongoing exploration and prospecting activity, particularly for diamonds and uranium.
