The Economy

Introduction:

The economy of the area is based on renewable resource harvesting non-renewable resource extraction and energy development, and service industries such as tourism and government. Wage employment is available in mining, oil and gas exploration and extraction, construction, tourism, government services and the export of fur, fish and traditional arts and crafts. Because the wage economy holds little hope of full employment for the rapidly expanding population. there is an important subsistence economy which supplies food, clothing, and raw materials for traditional arts and crafts.

Due to the remoteness of the area, much of the non-renewable resource potential is unexplored. The exploitation of potential that has been identified has been limited by the cost of development in such a remote and hostile environment and the cost of transportation of the product to market.
