Activity #2: Where to look!!

The purpose of this exercise is for students to learn where to find clues when looking for an archaeology site. Give the participants a fictional map of a prehistoric people's home range. They will then work in teams to find items on a list. This activity can be done in any outdoor area such as in a park or on school grounds. This activity can help the students understand how difficult it can be for archaeologists to reconstruct what the area may have been like in the past.

Supplies:

  • A fictional map of the home range of a prehistoric peoples.
  • A list of artifacts to find or representations of them.
  • An open area for the search to occur, such as a park or school area.

Sample

Artifacts to look for:

  1. arrowhead
  2. harpoon shaft
  3. gathering basket
  4. fishing hook
  5. charred seeds
  6. bones - with man made cuts
  7. fire pit
  8. post mold
  9. rock art
  10. shell midden

After the students have located the items, have them explain how they knew where to look. Ask the students to formulate a description of how people may have lived 100 years ago. Ask the students to include some resources that may have been available to the people living in the area, such as.

  • food
  • clothing
  • shelter
