Jack Simpson was born on October 9, 1954. Simpson grew up in Camperville,
Manitoba with his family.
Simpson
has been painting and sculplting for as long as he can remember. He
didn't get serious about it until 1984 after a family tragedy, and
used his painting and sculpting as a way to cope.
Simpson
who is in his 2nd year of Arts at the University of Manitoba says
that every thing that he creates, has some connection with his life,
something that he has seen or done.
While
he was growing up, he used to go hunting a lot, as most people did
back then. To be one with nature. Simpson says that as a hunter, you
see a lot, and that is where he acquired a great deal of his ideas.

Mask
This
piece was carved from wood, and false hair was used. Simpson made
this as a class project.
This
piece, was painted with red and black, which represents day and
night in the Mohawk culture. Simpson said that they (the Mohawk)
either use black (night) or red (day), so he decided to combine
the two and have the day and night come together as one.

Cougar
This
piece is made from rock, deer horn, clay, paint, and a wood base.
Simpson, who used to travel, decided on this beautiful sculpture,
after meeting a cougar face to face while in British Columbia.
Simpson said, "it was the most intimidating thing I've ever seen."
Simpson was hunting as the time, and came across this magnificent
animal having a drink of water at a lake, the cougar sensed him
and looked up and stared him right in the eyes. Capturing this
unforgettable memory, and putting it into his work, Simpson created
this.

Lady
in Box
This
is made from wood, oil paint, clay and a pair of kid jeans. Simpson
was trying to combine the art of painting along with sculpting.
The wooden box represents the "shacks" that people lived in when
Simpson was child, as housing wasn't what it is now." Simpson
said that combining the two arts was "just an idea".
