Primarily an illustrator, Katsi'tsakwas Ellen
Gabriel is a graduate of Concordia University's B.F.A. programme (1990). She first came to
national attention as spokesperson for the People of the Longhouse of Kanehsatà:ke during
the Crisis of 1990 (Oka) and has continued in this role at speaking engagements across
Canada, in Europe, and in Japan. To this end also, she sees her art as combatting the
stereotypes and misconceptions held by non-Natives. Gabriel was the recipient of a
Canadian Native Arts Foundation Grant (1989-90) and a Seagram's Foundation - Concordia
University Video production grant (1992-97).
