The Installation of a Special Exhibition

Installation d'une exposition spéciale

Pages  1  |  2

To stimulate public interest in the campaign to save the Abu Simbel temples in the Nile Valley, threatened by inundation when the Aswan Dam is completed, the United Arab Republic in 1961 decided to send to America an exhibition of small Egyptian art objects selected from the famous Tutankhamun treasures in the Cairo Museum.

In the United States the exhibition was sponsored by the American Association of Museums and circulated by the Smithsonian Institution. The objects were first shown in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and then in fifteen other museums throughout the United States. The National Gallery of Canada arranged the Canadian tour during 1964-65, which included showings in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Quebec.

At the National Gallery of Canada the nature of the exhibition required a departure from the usual treatment of paintings and sculpture. For this occasion a special set ting was created by Robert M. Hume, former Installations Officer for the National Gallery. Several views of the galleries are reproduced here.
