Notes

cf. Art Gallery of Toronto information form completed by Mrs Barnsley in 1912 verifying that the artist had not worked for 20 years; from 1907 until his death Verdun Protestant Hospital records describe Barnsley's general condition as 'not lucid'.

There are a number of studies of street-lamps in Bamsley's sketches.

Acquired as 'La Seine à Paris' in 1962, this oil view of Courbevoie is probably the larger of two works exhibited variously as 'On the Seine', 'On the Seine, Paris' and 'On the Seine, below Paris' in R. 16 Present location unknown; possibly a sketch for it is the very rough pencil drawing inscribed (inter alia) 'Quai St Bernard' in a sketch book in coll. Gerald Stevens, Toronto.

Mrs Barnsley's comments on National Gallery and Art Gallery of Toronto information for his, personal recollections of Mrs Frederick Hall of St Louis (who recalls the Barnsleys' visit to her family c. 1887) and newspaper accounts in 'Chips and Shavings' (cf. n. 12) all support this account.

Pencil, 3 7/8" x 6 1/2", inscribed lower left 'St Malo / la Plage', probably 1885; Vancouver retrospective catalogue no. 44b.
