Notes

See G. Aymonier, Dessins de maîtres anciens (catalogue), March, 1965. Reproduced, No.7.

Daniel Ternois, Jacques Callot, Catalogue complet de son oeuvre dessiné, Paris, 1961; and L'art de Jacques Callot, Paris, 1962.

Ternois, Catalogue, Nos. 25-39, 42-45. Here Ternois dates the drawings 1612-1617. He later narrows the date to 1615-1617.

Tempesta's engravings are listed in Bartsch, Le peintre graveur, xvii, 941 -968. It has not been possible to make a specific identification of the horse after which Callot derived the present drawing.

Ternois was able to trace several of the other drawings in the series back to the Fonds Medici in Florence. The early provenance of the present drawing is not known, but it is probably from the same source.

See D. Ternois, "A Drawing by Jacques Callot: Studies of Horses and Cavaliers," Master Drawings, 1, 1963, 45. Ternois here discusses a drawing in the Schrafl Collection in Zürich, and mentions that others have appeared. I am grateful to Professor Walter Vitzthum for calling my attention to this article.
