Designed to replace aging wartime aircraft like the Canso in the role of aerial forest fire control, Canadair's waterbomber program is the company's longest running production program.

Many aircraft have been adapted to act as water bombers - world war two bombers and many of the deHavilland STOL aircraft - but none are as effective as the CL-215 and it's variants in this role; these aircraft are in use worldwide and, though without an official name, have been dubbed the "Superscooper."

The 215 - and it's modernized decendants the 215T and 415 - join the CL-84 Dynavert and CL-41 Tutor as aircraft designed and built entirely by Canadair.
