1504 ---- Canso is visited by Basque, Breton and French fishermen.

1604 ---- Canso was an established seasonal community centered
around the Cod Fishery.

1744 ---- Fort and settlement on Grassy Island destroyed by the French
from Louisbourg.

|
1745 ---- British and New England forces assemble at Grassy Island and
begin the first siege of Louisbourg.

|
1749 ---- Halifax is founded by Edward Cornwallis.
|
|
1755 ---- Expulsion of the Acadians.
|
|
1758 ---- Final siege of Louisbourg.
|
|
1764 ---- Wilmot Town plot laid out. (Town of Canso)

|
1812 ---- Whitman's move to Canso and establish their business.
|
|
1814 ---- A.N. Whitman II, first Whitman born in Canso.
|
|
1837 ---- Patent for Electromagnetic Telegraph by Samuel Morse.

1855 ---- First Telegraph office opened at the old Bigelow House in Canso.

1858 ---- First Transatlantic Cable operates for only four weeks.

1866 ---- Cyrus Field has eventual success with a Transatlantic Cable
from Ireland to Newfoundland.

1874 ---- Faraday Station opened at Torbay, Nova Scotia.

1881 ---- On May 23rd, first Western Union cable landed at Dover Bay. October 18,
Cranberry light off Canso burned. About seventy tons of coal burning, one
vessel reports seeing flames 70 miles out, another 25 miles distant.

1884 ---- Commercial Cable begins operations on December 24th from Hazel Hill.

1888 ---- Brick Cable Office erected at Hazel Hill for Commercial Cable.

1896 ---- S.S. Dickenson's letters concerning the Pigeon Experiment.

1901 ---- Canso incorporated as a town. Queen Victoria dies.

|
1904 ---- A.N. Whitman cold storage plant built. Whitman started dynamos for
electric light. March 18, S.S. Faraday laid shore end of cable at Fox Island.

1906 ---- Canso Post Office and Customs House built.
|
|
1912 ---- Titanic sinks off Newfoundland.
|
|
1914 ---- Outset of World War One.
|
|
1923 ---- Western Union staff housing built on Carleton Terrace.
|
|
1930 ---- Father Jimmy Tompkins initiated the movement which culminated in
the formation of the United Maritime Fishermen.
|
|
1933 ---- The people of Canso with Rev Jimmy Tompkins as their leader, introduced
the Credit Union Movement in Nova Scotia.

|
1939 ---- World War Two begins.
|
|
1944 ---- Canso School and Town Office as well as Post Office and Customs
House burned.
|
|
1945 ---- World War Two ends.
|
|
1955 ---- Western Union leaves Canso.
|
|
1956 ---- Last cable brought ashore at Fox Island for Commercial Cable.

1962 ---- Commercial Cable Closes 'CS' at Hazel Hill.
