"the Original Information Highway"

Canso & Hazel Hill

Nova Scotia, Canada

Explore the original information highway in North America by looking at Canso, Nova Scotia in 1874. The Canso Historical Society, in partnership with Industry Canada, has put together this interesting web site with period photographs and information. You may browse through any of our topics from the index at your leisure, but we recommend that you start with the Cable Story.

Canso is mentioned often in this site. It includes a larger area, including the nearby communities of Hazel Hill, Little Dover and Fox Island. In the height of its cable days, Canso had two major cable companies, a number of transatlantic lines and a very vibrant society. Western Union had its office in the Town of Canso while Commercial Cable had its offices two miles away at Hazel Hill. Little Dover and Fox Island were nearby, and both were landing sites for cables in and out of the area.
