The U.S.S.R began the race for space when they launched the first satellite Sputnik 1 (Sputnik means "Traveling Companion"). This satellite was launched n 1957 it weighed 184 pounds. The purpose was a test satellite with a simple radio and a thermometer. Yet the U.S believed they were receiving secret information via the satellites beep beep beep. The Sputnik satellite was launched from BAIKOUR COSMODROME on Oct. 4. 1957 it was only a test payload of a radio and thermometer. It was referred to as a "ES" (elementary satellite).
